Am Mittwoch, 6. Dezember 2023 um 17:00 Uhr werden der Rektor der TU Dortmund, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Manfred Bayer, und Univ.-Prof. Dr. Patricia Ronan von der Fakultät Kulturwissenschaft, im Auditorium Maximum das Ehrendoktorat an Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ed Folsom von der University of Iowa verleihen.
Ed Folsom ist einer der führenden US-amerikanischen Literaturwissenschaftler und hat sein wissenschaftliches Leben der Erforschung von Walt Whitman und dessen Werk gewidmet. Er ist der Mitbegründer des „Walt Whitman Archive“, eines der wichtigsten Projekte in den Digital Humanities und die umfangreichste Website, die einem einzelnen Autor gewidmet ist.
Im Jahr 1996 war Ed Folsom Fulbright-Professor in Dortmund und fast 30 Jahre lang verantwortlich für die Partnerschaft zwischen der University of Iowa und der TU Dortmund. Die „Whitman Week“, die er mit internationalen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern gründete, fand 2008 zum ersten Mal in Dortmund statt und wird seitdem jährlich an Universitäten auf der ganzen Welt organisiert.
Die Laudatio wird von Professor Christopher Merrill gehalten, dem Direktor des International Writing Program an der University of Iowa, der gleichzeitig einer der führenden Stimmen in der internationalen Kulturdiplomatie ist. Conferral of the Honorary Doctorate on Professor Ed Folsom, University of Iowa
On Wednesday, 6 December 2023, 5 p.m., the Rector and the former Dean of the Fakultät Kulturwissenschaften of TU Dortmund University, Professor Manfred Bayer and Professor Patricia Ronan, will confer the honorary doctorate at the Auditorium Maximum on Professor Ed Folsom of The University of Iowa.
One of the premier scholars of American literature in the US, Ed Folsom has devoted his life to the study of Walt Whitman and his oeuvre. He is the co-founder of a major Digital Humanities project, the “Walt Whitman Archive,” one of the first and by now most comprehensive digital archives devoted to a single author.
Ed Folsom was a Fulbright professor at Dortmund in 1996 and responsible for the Iowa-Dortmund exchange for almost 30 years. The “Whitman Week,” which he founded with international scholars, took place in Dortmund for the first time in 2008 and has since taken place annually at universities around the world.
The laudator will be Professor Christopher Merrill, Director of the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program, and a leading voice in international cultural diplomacy.
