Prof. Dr. Christiane Binder

Christiane Maria Binder is Professor of English Literature at the Technische Universität Dortmund. She studied English, Russian, pedagogy and psychology at Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg from 1973 to 1977, spending a year abroad at the State University of Voronezh/USSR (1975-76). In 1977 she completed her diploma thesis on Russian children’s literature. In 1981 she did her PhD on English Renaissance literature at Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. She taught there from 1980 to 1994. From 1983 to 1987 she was a guest lecturer at the University of Havana/Cuba. Her habilitation (1990) was on Restoration literature. In 1994 she became the very first professor in English Studies from the former East of Germany to be appointed in the West of reunified Germany. Her research and teaching cover almost a thousand years of literary history, from the medieval period to the present.

She has published widely, has attended conferences and been invited for papers and guest lectures in Great Britain, France, the Netherlands, Austria, Italy, the US, Russia, Taiwan, Hongkong, Cuba, Kenya und South Africa. She is also a member of the Editorial Board of Connotations. A Journal for Critical Debate. For a couple of years she reviewed English-speaking picturebooks for Grundschulmagazin Englisch. The Primary English Magazine. In 2016 she became a member of the Editorial Council of Practices & Interpretations: A Journal of Philology, Teaching and Cultural Studies (Southern Federal University Rostov-on-Don).

Either closely associated with or additionally to these scholarly concerns Christiane Maria Binder pursues wider interests in creative writing, translation and photography. She published a travelogue/an autobiography and two children’s books, illustrated by her brother and her father. And did translations from Russian into German. For the book covers of three of her latest monographs she used some of her own photo images. In 2018 she organised the photo exhibition “Fourscapes & Chronotopes” at the University Library of TU Dortmund, in collaboration with Dr. Kieran Harrington, Dr. Nataliya Gorbina and Sarah Neef.  And she was the winner of the September 2018 Random Holiday Cards contest organised by Fachschaft Kunst at TU Dortmund.

The research activities, studies and publications completed already, currently undertaken or planned for the future are concerned with questions touching upon literary, linguistic, cultural and didactic issues. Literature is being studied in a way that practices a huge methodological variety ranging from close reading to Deconstruction and Cultural Materialism. Furthermore a cross-over to other discourses is employed (e.g. art [incl. theatre, the fine arts and music], sociology, philosophy, religion, pedagogy, psychology, the educational sciences). Last but not least, this research transcends the national boundaries to include trans-national and intercultural perspectives (e.g. on Russian language, literature and culture).

    • picturebook studies (reading research, semiotics, book illustration and graphic design, multilingualism, multiculturalism and interculturality, literary didactics)     
  • intercultural relationships between English, Russian and German literature and culture
  • representations of intercultural encounters between Western and Eastern Europe in literature (examples of English, German, French and Russian literature including the text types of novel, essay, autobiography, travelogue, and fantasy; special focus: Joseph Conrad)

A photo exhibition that accompanied my seminar “Time and Space Experiences: Chronotopes in English and New English/Postcolonial Literature” in the winter semester of 2018/19. My part was to design and organize the project and to contribute to it with photographs of my own, together with colleagues and friends from Ireland, Russia and Germany (Dr. Kieran Harrington, Dr. Nataliya Gorbina, Sarah Neef). The exhibition took a visual approach to temporal and spatial relationships in life and in photography as another mode of artistic representation. Its pictures are now embellishing the walls of one of the hallways in our English Department.
